Photography

Here I explore some of my more recent photography. This project mainly follows me and my partner on various trips we took during covid. He is uncomfortable having his photo taken and through candid photography, I hope to capture, him, our travels, and our relationship.

The photos were an exciting project and although there is nothing profound about the content of the images I enjoyed the mixture of portraiture and landscape/architectural images. Mostly, I was happy to have images of my partner he was comfortable with and images to remind us of our travels.

This demonstrates my range of photography skills and experience in lightroom and photoshop well.

Beach and Viewing Tower

As the weather rapidly changed and the wind picked up this photo provides a moody shot of my partner and the Brighton seaside. The obscuring of the viewing tower is also visible here and it appears to disappear into the clouds. It is as if it might reach beyond the ever-worsening weather captured in this photo.

Viewing Tower

Few words contain my confusion about this tower. Its design, in isolation, is quite elegant. A display in utility made beautiful - no fuss or distraction from its mission statement of providing views of Brighton. However, its function feels entirely unnecessary, the city is low rise and has very little additional beauty or interest from very high up. Other buildings already rise just beyond the skyline to provide some attractive views but the height of the tower provides little more to those views other than the possibility of seeing air conditioners of various shops and people’s back gardens. It is an incredible building to photograph seeming almost alien from various perspectives.

Rottingdean

2020

These photos were taken in a village called Rottingdean. The windmill shown had become a defining image in the town. It, along with a few other structures, is maintained, and its history is documented, by the local preservation society. It reminds me of my hometown and the massive importance placed on our local traditions and history. To outsiders, the small ruins and local festival probably seemed so similar to the gala days of other towns in Scotland but to us, it seemed so monumental, so fundamental to our existence.

I feel like the photo above shows the appearance of the mill to outsiders - a small break in the horizon. The first image below shows how it appears to locals - a large and imposing part of the town’s identity.

Amsterdam

motion

Captured this amusing moment after leaving my partner behind at a junction. Cyclists are inescapable in Amsterdam and as a result, there are bikes throughout this series of photos. Between the bikes, canals, and narrow frontages, one could easily identify the city from these images alone.

It’s a reminder of how cities develop a distant character. To me, the colour of Edinburgh's sandstone buildings is always really obvious in the background of photos that are otherwise unclear in their locale.

Delivery

The ubiquity of food delivery services making a otherwise wonderful photo look like an ad.
